Philosophy Statement

Every person is an individual and should be treated as such. Therefore, my goal is to assist every student to be the best that they want to be and relish in their accomplishments.

I work within the frame of mind that some students take voice lessons because they have a burning desire to be performers on stage, others for the pure pleasure of singing.  However, the student must take learning to sing seriously or it would be a waste of his/her money and of my time.  Students coming from the studio will have the reputation of being musicians not just vocalists or singers.

If you can speak, you can sing!  This is a fact.  One just needs to know how to utilize the vocal apparatus to achieve the appropriate sound.  One should be given instruction so that he/she can utilize the vocal instrument to its fullest extent. Therefore I teach all styles of singing.

The studio is a very "friendly" place.  I've been touted for my enthusiasm and moral support.  I promote an environment for "safe" performing by encouraging mutual respect for every student regardless of the level of competency . Students are requested to perform in recitals and participate in the California Music Educator's Solo and Ensemble Festival (middle school and high school levels).   Students are also encouraged to perform and audition at every opportunity.  The more you put yourself out there, the easier it gets.

Students are partners in receiving training.  Because the voice is the body, we are building a very personal relationship. Students share equal responsibility for their progress.  We must have dialogue and open communication.  A bond of trust is important for both the student and teacher.  The student must feel certain that the teacher is going to provide training that will not injure the voice.  The teacher must feel sure that  the student is open to filtering the information that is provided.  As the facilitator, I  impart my knowledge.  It is up to the student to take that information, process it and utilize it!  You'll always wonder if you could have done it if you didn't try! I will not take credit for a student's success, nor will I except  total responsibility for lack of progress.
